Blessed Michael McGivney

Fr. Michael McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in 1882 in New Haven, Connecticut to support Catholic families in need. Only 8 years later, he passed away in 1890 from pneumonia while pastor of St. Thomas Church in Thomaston, Connecticut.

Fr. McGivney's cause for canonization opened in 1996 to assess and advocate for the recognition of Fr. McGivney as a saint within the Church. A miracle attributed to Fr. McGivney's intercession was approved by the Vatican in 2020, and he was declared "Blessed" at a beatification Mass on October 31st, 2020. His feast day occurs on August 13th of each year.

The Church requires a second miracle through Fr. McGivney's intercession to formally declare him a saint. Below is the standard prayer for his canonization, along with PDF versions of the prayer and the novena for his intercession.

Prayer for the Canonization of Blessed Michael McGivney

God, our Father, protector of the poor and defender of the widow and orphan, you called your priest, Blessed Michael McGivney, to be an apostle of Christian family life and to lead the young to the generous service of their neighbor.

Through the example of his life and virtue, may we follow your Son, Jesus Christ, more closely, fulfilling his commandment of charity and building up his Body which is the Church. Let the inspiration of your servant prompt us to greater confidence in your love so that we may continue his work of caring for the needy and the outcast.

We humbly ask that you glorify Blessed Michael McGivney on earth according to the design of your holy will. Through his intercession, grant the favor I now present (here make your request).

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
